Note:
"Judge" Clarence Moore, as he was known in his later years, grew up in Columbus and graduated in the very first class of the University of Mississippi at Oxford. At age 24 he moved to Arkansas to operate his sister's plantation, San Souci, when the latter's husband suddenly died in 1861. In 1863 he left to join the Confederate forces and served under General Nathan Bedford Forrest. After the war Moore returned toMississippi County Arkansas as a plantation owner, and served terms as Deputy Sheriff and as Tax Collector. His title as "Judge" was awarded to him as a sign of respect.
